The two pillars of a successful interior design project!

Dear Friends,

Whenever I think of any design, be it interior design or product design, a few things very naturally come up in my mind. These are in the form of questions.

The best part is, answers to these questions can give rise toa very successful design in itself. Let's see how.
If I am planning to design a piece of furniture, let's say a double bed, immediate I start relating to what I alreadyknow about double beds, some picture/image I have alreadyseen, something I have seen in some furniture shop, etc...Then I start thinking about what material I should thinkabout, the budget, dimensions, age group of people who aregoing to use it, etc... If you answer these questions one byone on a paper, you will get a blueprint of the design process, so that you can convert in into technical drawings, with all the joinery details and finally the product.

Amongst above mentioned questions some are directly related tofunction of the double bed as a piece of furniture.

What does this mean?

When I ask myself, what should be the dimensions of a doublebed? I have very little freedom to decide the dimensions ofthe bed, because there are certain norms to be followed in order to serve it's basic function and that's comfort.

But what if I say that I will keep the overall surface area of the bed same , but make it round in plan. Will it be ok..

Now here I am trying to achieve both function and aesthetics, without sacrificing the comfort of the person who will use it.So during any design process there will be times when thedesigner need to take some decisions where he has to keepaside his wildest ideas and pay attention to function first.

That's why the true success of an interior design project isa good balance between function and aesthetics.
Expressing this kind of balance through design is not an easytask, because function is universally accepted, but aesthetics, not always.

What does this mean?

Beauty is always relative. A washbasin has a common universalfunction of an appliance to be used for washing hands, but it'sbeauty is relative. What is beautiful for me, might not holdtrue for you.

So a design expression can have a unique style of the designer himself. It is possible that the designer is morecomfortable with certain kinds of materials/finishes/colorschemes, etc.. which can reflect in his designs.
In spite of these personal touches a good designs always caters the needs of the user first. A good designer hasa certain kind of convincing power in his/her style whichhe uses to expresses in the design without sacrificing the likes/dislikes of the user.

There are designers who are more comfortable in designing onlya certain kind space such as bathrooms, bedrooms, living rooms, public spaces such as restaurants, clubs, gymnasiums.

Of course this is entirely of a personal choice, but there is this same message in their designs, shell out your egoand design for the best parameters with worst possibilitiestaken into considerations. This is what gives birth to a great design.

I hope this article was helpful.

The truth about color schemes in an interior design project.

Dear friends, It is a universally accepted truth that colorimpacts human mind and therefore must be used wisely in aninterior space.

There is a normal practice amongst interior designers, to use"color schemes" to enhance the beauty of an interior space.

A color scheme normally has more that one color. The typeof color used and the type of combinations used will decidewhat kind of interest the space will express when it's beenpainted with a color scheme.

Let's see what are the types of colors

1)Hot Color Schemes

Primarily red and Yellow color lies in this category. These colors have an excitatory effect on human mind and hence areused in spaces where human activity is rapid and excitatory.
Such spaces are Circus Tents, Pubs, Sports Complexes, etc.. Inall these spaces physical activity is the primary function andhence a proper use of hot color scheme can greatly add to thequality of space.

2)Cool Color Schemes

Primarily Blue and Green fall under these category. These colorstend to create a soothing effect. Because its cool nature these are used where physical activity is of less importance.
Such spaces are bedrooms, hospitals, etc... You will extensive green in hospitals because of its cool nature.

3)Neutral color schemes.

Primarily White, Black and shades of these two i.e. Gray fallunder this category. Black and white when use with the hot or cool color scheme can shift the effect of hotness or coolness ofboth predominant color schemes.

Apart from these three basic color schemes infinite combinationsof all these colors is possible which can give rise to qualitiessuch as contrast, brightness, shallowness, etc...
In spite of such enduring qualities of the color schemes in interiordesign, color has a certain weakness built in itself.

The kind of emotion the color will evoke in human mind is directlydependant on two major factors.

1)The quality of surface on which it is applied.
2)The quality of light which falls on the colored surface.

These two factors must never be ignored. If there is no light, there is no identification of the color itself. A red coloredsurface will look different in morning dim sunlight, afternoonharsh sunlight and evening sunlight. Also it will have somemore exciting effect if an artificial light is projected on the surface.

A rough surface painted with a soothing color such as white willhave different appearance that a plain surface painted with white. Also if sunlight falls of a rough surface, it will cast minuteshadows of the details caused because of the roughness, thus limiting the smooth effect, the white color can cause.

Some designers have actually used this as a benefit to arouseinterest in a space. Apart from these every material on this planethas his own color. The brick exposed walls already have their ownreddish/brown color with a rough surface. The mortar joints betweenthe bricks also have their own color and texture.

That's why color in interior design is not something, which mustbe applied or not applied, but it is only a visual element whichis already present in our environment. The space is more importantthan the color and the appropriate color scheme will greatlyenhance the visual quality of the space attained by its form.

What does this mean?

We are used to live in rectangular spaces. The rooms in ourhome are predominantly rectangular in volume. But imaginea bedroom which is circular and also has a domical roof on top.
Here the form of the space itself is so exciting, that color playsa secondary role. Here the form of the space itself creates excitement, which could otherwise be achieved using a hotcolor scheme in a rectangular volume.

That's why any color scheme in interior design is alwaysdependant on the form of the space, quality of the surface on which it is applied and the amount of light it accepts.

I hope this article was informative to everyone.

How to generate ideas for your bedroom design?

Dear friends,

So, you want to design your bedroom. Hmm... looks like youare serious about it.

Lets' get started quickly. whenever I hear someone sayhe/she wants to design/decorate a bedroom a lot of thingscome to my mind.

But, let me clear one thing design and decorating are twodifferent aspects. When I say design, I mean a whole lotbigger perspective. Design includes a lot more maturity interms of how you perceive a space from within.
Of course I will cover more about design in some other article.Decoration is more close to everyday actions that can betaken in order to change or alter a space. Decoration deals with accessories used in a space. Very small things, such ascurtain rods, their color, lampshades, small statues, tablecloths, light fittings, are all parts of the detailing.

It is not that design does not deal with these aspects, butdecoration is more do-able easily than the whole designprocess.

If you are not aware of the decoration techniques, or where to start, I will give you a list of some place whereyou can observe and get inspiration.

1)Of course, the World Wide Web: this Internet is a good place to start. But the information on the internet is not always compiled and sorted out, the way you want it to be, so you might have to look deep.

2)Local Book stores: Interior design magazines, books, brochures from furniture manufacturers is a good source of inspiration. These books and magazines do their best to find out Works of successful designers, which can be quite inspiring.

3)Exhibitions: Exhibitions held by manufacturers of interior design products, can be a good source as well.

4)Movies and TV shows: Yes, these have a very high project budgets, so spend thousands of dollars every year to decorate the sets. Just keep your eyes open and you will definitely find some good themes in these too.

5)Look for hobby groups around in your city, look for seminars of those who are successful artists. Bedroom decoration includes detailing and paying attention to small things. Visit art galleries, where you can find some good paintings, other related artwork, which can enhance the beauty of your space.

Finally I would like to say that it's your room and youare the only person who knows better about your likes and dislikes. So start out immediately because "When There IsWill, There Is A Way".

How to design a Child bedroom?

Dear friends,

Children at age of 1 1/2 start to walk, talk and expressthemselves. Their parents are the role models for them. They learn to perform action which their parent teachthem.

Based on these teachings children vey quickly learn a taste about everything in life. This includes, the food they eat, the kind of toys they play with, the kind offriends they will make etc..

For a growing child it is necessary to expolre new things, apart from what his/her mom/dad teaches. A bedroom is agreat place to do this. When planned properly, a child bedroom can greatly enhance his/her learning experience.

Children have a curious mind. Even a child which is yet tospeak, this curiosity can be easily traced by looking at the broken toys, torn books, etc..

That's why as a bedroom designer creating spaces within the structural walls, using intersting furniture elements, cangralty help to add some curious thinking. Furniture piecesspecifically designed to create an adventure can be proposed.

Instead of using plain colored walls, theme base paintings, such as AESOP stories, fairy tales, can be painted on walls. These picturesd can include animals, trees, vehicles, humanbeings of different age groups. This gives an extra learningedge, because there is lot to learn about the world as a whole.

Creative flooring patterns can also be a good starting point. At the same time use of ceiling space as a storyboard can be used to give a knowledge of the "sun and moon".

Furniture with level differences can act as a way whichtends to give physical exercise and at the same time createa space of their own.

As far as linen is concerned, it should be easy to maintain, because it is more likely to get dirty and messy frequently.Above all these factors what is most important is a good natural light and free flowing air can add to the healthyatomsphere.

From above discussipn it is quite clear that bedroom design is not just arranging a few furniture pieces and arranging them in the physical space. It is much related to how humansreact to diferent artificially created materials, which includestheir color, texture, finishes, etc..

If used creatively it can greatly improve the quality of humanlife. I hope this article was helpful for moms/dads and alsofor the designers.

The concept of dynamic space in bedroom design.

Dear friends, can you define the term "space". By space I don'tmean the universe or the astronomical point of view. A spaceis the area which is enclosed between walls, floor and ceilingand which can be used as a habitual room.

Any empty bedroom space has certain parameters attached to itthe moment it gets created.
What are these parameters?

First of all the length, width, and height , the physicaldimensions of the bedroom. These three have a unique relation to each other. Rooms with less length and width and too muchheight or too broad length and width and less height are notproportionate and tend to create discomfort.

But there are special cases where too much of height is anecessity. Some examples are church buildings, cinema halls. Here it is necessary to accommodate large group of peopleand project a kind if grandness through design.
That's why the space gets altered depending upon the use or"function" of the space. Hence in a bedroom the space takesa form of its own depending upon inners activities of the space.

Let's see how.

Any bedroom space has certain leakage points attached toit. By "leakage" I don't mean rain water or any other kindof stuff coming in. The bedroom space is likely to have exitpoint attached to it, like following,

1)Exit to backyard.
2)Exit to attached toile block.
3)Exit to attached walk-in closet
4)Exit to balcony or terrace.
5)Openings of windows.

Depending upon the location of these, an imaginary travel pathgets fixed starting from the entrance door of the bedroom. Thisimaginary travel path forces the user to arrange the furniture,in a way which will not create obstruction in the path.

After the furniture has been arranged, what remains is the spaceused for circulation inside the bedroom. If the bedroom has asmall area and too many exit points (as mentioned above), thenthe room is left with a fixed furniture layout.

At such times the success of the bedroom decorating projectlies in detailing. By detailing I mean small things such asupholstery materials, color schemes, furniture textures and finishes.

But with bedrooms which have large areas, the moment you change the furniture layout, the circulation space takesa new form and the entire room looks a new one. This iswhat I mean by "dynamic space" which takes a new shape.

It's like that example of the glass half filled with water. The moment you change the quantity of water space alters and the glass looks different.

Here we have come to an interesting conclusion of this article. From the above discussion one thing is very clear. The "personality" of a space can be easily altered by allowing the empty circulation space to take a new form.
In interior design everyone talks about furniture, colors, textures, paints, wallpapers, etc... but no one talks about "Empty Space"which is equally powerful. Finally it is the empty space whichremains and is a measure of the comfort level for the user.If there is very less empty space remaining in a room after the furniture is placed, it is considered uncomfortable.

I hope this article was informative to everyone.

Thinking about Home Improvement? Then here's a checklist!

Dear friends, if you are planning to improve/renovate orrefurnish your home then this article can be a veryuseful guide and save your lot of time.

When it comes to home improvement, most people think thatit's has to do with painting the house from inside outand forget about it.

But any architectural structure is much more than just wallsand ceiling. There are many systems working simultaneously which keep the building under function.

Let's have a look at these systems one by one.

1) Structural System:

This includes the support system of the entire building, namelyfoundation, columns, beams, slabs(in R.C.C structure). The most commonly used structural systems is R.C.C. Other typesinclude steel and wood.
While renovating a building special attention must be given tothe structural support system. Slabs should be checked to beleak proof. Columns and beams which are exposed to external atmosphere must be checked for damage. R.C.C structural members are always covered with plaster. This plaster must be withoutdamage.
In case of steel structures, anti-rust treatment must be appliedwherever necessary.
In case of wooden structure anti-termite treatment must be appliedwherever necessary.

2) Plumbing System:

All pipelines which carry water in and out of the structure mustbe checked for leakage. The main are of possible leakage isat the joints, hence must be carefully treated.

Water taps at the washbasins, inside bathrooms, kitchen sinks, toilet blocks, should be checked for good and smooth operatingconditions.

3)Drainage System:

Drainage from kitchen, bathrooms, toilets should have an unobstructedand shortest path to outside chambers. Any clogging of these lines can cause overflowing of the chambers, hence should be checkedand cleaned.

4)Electrical Systems:

This starts with the main supply of the electricity from thelocal authorities. The point of entering the main supply should bechecked for any excessive disturbance in voltage levels, whichmight cause damage to electrical appliances inside.

All switch boards and switches in respective rooms should be checkedfor proper and safe functioning. Security systems such as earthing and M.C.B's should be checked for safe functioning.

5) Doors and Windows

These form an important part of any structure as far as safetyis concerned. Proper functioning of the doors and windowshutters is necessary. If your home has a security alarm systeminstalled, then it must be kept updated and in proper working condition.

Door and window shutter hinges should be applied with lubricantsfor smooth operations. I case of sliding doors and windows, trackswhich allow sliding should be dust free.

6) Glass Panes

All glass panes used on windows and doors should be dust free.Any broken or cracked glass panes should be replaced immediately.

If the building has a skylight, then it should be checked to beleak proof and clean, to allow clear and unobstructed sunlight inthe interiors.

7) Flooring Materials

In most cases tiles are used for flooring. All tiles should bechecked for cracks and most importantly leveling.
In every home flooring has a natural slope to avoid cloggingof water if any such situation arises. Tiled flooringmust be checked at joints. Any cracks in joins must bechecked with proper bonding material.
In case of wooden flooring, extra care must be taken to keepthe flooring termite-free.

8) Wall Plaster and Wall Paint.

All external walls must be checked from outside for a properlayer of plaster. Plaster prevents the rainwater to seep insidethe structure. If external plaster gets damaged, rain waterseeps inside causing dampening of walls.
All internal walls must be checked for scraping of paint.

8) Furniture and Carpentry Items.

All furniture items must be termite free and sturdy at the joints. A coat of good quality wooden polish can add life to the furniture pieces.

Other carpentry work includes door and window shutters, doorand window frames.

9) Other Accessories.

This includes small thing which matter a lot, such as all the locking arrangement at doors, windows, towel rods in the bathroom/wash basins, arrangement to dry washed clothes, storage arrangements in kitchen/bathroom.

10)External Systems

This can include a solar water heater, electric pumps to pushthe water from underground water tank to Overhead water tank.,Cable TV antennas.

All these systems must be checked for proper functioning.

From the above discussion it is clear that proper functioningof any architectural structure is dependant of many complex systems which work simultaneously.

Hence all these must be given attention and respect. Any buildingis just like a human body, with movable and stationary parts. If dealt with proper care can give a very healthy living experiencefor years to come.

I hope this article was helpful to everyone.

6 Factors that affect a bedroom design project.

Dear friends,

If you are planning to design and decorate your own bedroom, then you must know that there are many factors that can affectthe outcome of your creative exercise.

Let's have a look at some of the possible factors.

1)Furniture:

Furniture occupies maximum space in a room. The size and style of the furniture you choose will directlyaffect the way the space is perceived after the decorationis complete.
Furniture pieces, which are abutting the walls such asdressing tables, wardrobes, cabinets, form the face of the walls which were previously blank in an empty room. Becauseof this the face of the furniture is a major factor iscreating the mood of an space.

2)Interior Color Scheme:

Color has a direct effect on humanmind. Color can make the room smaller or bigger than itis. For example dark rooms are perceived smaller in volumethan those with bright and cheerful colors.

It's not the room which changes, it's the effect of the color which our mind picks up.

3)Wallpapers:

Wallpaper is a good alternative to using paints on walls. The greatest advantage of using wallpapers is thatthey can be applied quickly.

Using wallpapers with design patterns can quickly alter a space and give a "rich" look to a space. Wallpapers areavailable in washable types as well.

The only problem with wallpapers is that they can get tornbecause of sharp edges of furniture items. If you have children in your family then maintaining a them can be alittle nuisance.

4)Upholstery and Linen:

This includes bed sheets, cushion covers, curtains, carpets, etc.. All these are dependent on somethingelse. What does this mean?

Curtains are always in association with doors, windows orother openings in walls. So the texture/color/finish of curtainsdefine a frame to the openings thus affecting the interior space.
Other upholstery items are dependant on shape and size of thefurniture on which they are used. That's why a clever useof color/texture/finishes can greatly enhance the furniture piece thus altering the overall grade of the space.

5)Lighting:

A well planned electrical and lighting plancan greatly enhance the interior space. Depending upon theinternal arrangement of the furniture lighting can be usedto enhance certain areas of the space.

Spotlights and filler lights can be used as and whererequired. Filler lights are used to achieve a uniform lighting, which is normally available during daytime from sunlight.

Spotlights used in the form of lampshades can be used to catera specific area such as study tables, bedsides. Apartfrom these two types decorative lamps used as hangings canadd extra mood to the space.

6)Project Budget:

Budget is a very important factor in any project. Professional designers are very skilled in maintaininga balance between creative designs and economical design.

A design which is economical yet projects a highly creativemood is very hard to achieve. However a good market researchcan easily make you a good and sensitive designer. Keepingin mind the various materials available in market and proposingthem in designs is a good practice.

I would like to make one important point here. A design withexpensive an expensive budget is not necessarily a good design.A simple and aesthetically pleasing design solution can easilybe achieved with creative thinking of what you already havewith you.

From the above discussion you can fairly assume that a slightchange in any one of the above factors can alter the appearance your bedroom. If you are planning to refurnish your bedroom, you can use this as a dummy checklist to organize the entireprocess.

I hope this article was helpful for everyone.

How home furnishing can add personality to a space?

Dear friends, have you ever entered an empty room, without any furniture in it. Such a room always looksspacious, but lacks a "personality".

The moment you start adding some furniture, the spacestarts to attract a face on itself. Depending upon thevolume of the objects being put, the space gets altered ina dynamic fashion.

A typical home consists of a living room, bed room(s), kitchen, toilet blocks, family room, study room etc.. All thesespaces have their own specific function from the user'spoint of view.

When these spaces get furnished the previous identity ofan empty space get blocked by the objects being placed. The face of the furniture object, is the new face of theroom. Whenever you enter these rooms, you see the new facefirst, since the furniture occupies quite a bit of floorand wall space.

Any habitual space also has one more important aspectattached to it. Every habitual space always has windowsas a necessary functional arrangement. Depending upon thefunction of the room the space can have doors as well.

These openings in walls create a kind of attachment of theinterior space with outside natural world. This is a verypowerful aspect in any design project. If the outside floraand fauna is densely populated with natural elements suchas trees, water, mountains, this reflects clearly anddirectly on the choice of furniture the designer wouldmake in the inside spaces.

If the home is located in a crowd urban cityscape, the choice of design theme would be different. The choiceof furniture is directly related to comfort level of everyindividual. Selecting furniture which goes with theentire theme as well as satisfies the person on thecomfort scale can change the way the room feels.

So the personality of an interior space is largely dependanton what's happening outside the space, rather than the spaceitself. The outside events such a presence of seashore, flowing river, mountain ranges, snow falls, or even ahighway full of traffic can greatly alter the furnishing.

For example if your home is just next to a busy street, youmight want to use cane curtains on windows which wouldcut-off all the noise easily. So the use of curtains has altered the face of the room to some extent and thus forcesthe designer to make appropriate choices for other objectsin the room, which would easily merge with the texture, color, finish of the cane curtains.

On the other hand if your home is on a sea shore, youmight go in for curtains which block the heavy wind, butdon't block the beautiful view. Here again the room wouldhave a different face and the entire theme makes a shifton itself.

I hope this article was helpful for everyone.

How do I finalize budget for my bedroom design project?

Budget is one of the important factors in design and decoratinginterior spaces. Professional designers are trained to designvarious elements of the space in a way that would be mosteconomical without sacrificing the beauty of their design.

This balancing act between money end and the aesthetic end isa difficult task. But before even chalking out a budget planthere are certain things that need to be considered here.

When it comes to finalizing budget, some people depend entirelyon the designer. Since the cost of the entire project directlydepends upon the finishes and materials used, they think thatthe designer will take care of all the economic aspects tillthe execution. But in practical life this may not happen.

If you are not quite sure about what you really want out of thedecorating project, I mean the real purpose of this whole decorationproject, you might end up spending a lot more that what youcan actually afford to.
The reason I am talking this way is, many people unconsciouslybelieve that "expensive design is a good design solution". Which isnot always true. Of course expensive design will look good andimpressive, but need not be beautiful. This is especially true with personal spaces such as a bedroom.

That's why it is first necessary for you to understand from within, why do you want to decorate or redecorate your bedroom. You canask yourself questions like these....

1)Do I want more comfort in my room?
2)Do I want to feel good amongst other fellow colleagues in my office?
3)Do I want to spend some money on decorating because I have never done it before?
4)Is there any special purpose for such decorating work, for example your wedding or Christmas holidays?
5)Any other you can think of....

Now let's try to answer any one question from the above list.Let's say I select the first question and answer it as "yes, I needmore comfort in my bedroom."

Now if I want more comfort in my room I can easily chalk out a listof points that causing my room to be uncomfortable at this present moment. If altering only a few amongst them will make my room morebright and cheerful, I won't go in for a full and heavy decorating project with loads of work and money being spent.
Writing down out those defective areas and doing a little marketresearch on the web or local stores/yellow pages can fairly givean idea of the pricing and budget requirements.

So the most important is "purpose" of your decorating project. If thepurpose of your decorating project changes, you will have to facea different set of problems. For example if you want to decorate yourbedroom because it's your marriage, then probably you will have toadd or alter certain amenities because then you will be sharing theroom with your husband/wife.

In such a case you might go in for a full design and remodelingproject, where your would be life partner will also participate infinalizing various aspects of design such as color schemes, finishes, and also the budget.
This was just a small snippet of what and how you can easily controlthe budget in a decorating project. I will try t throw some morelight on budget issues in my future articles.

Till then, happy reading....

How to kickstart a good bedroom design project?

Dear friends,

Any room in your home is primarily a space within walls, floorand a ceiling. When the structure or the apartment getsconstructed, the architect and the structural contractor hastaken all the care that it is stable and can withstand outsidenatural forces like, earthquakes, heavy winds, rainfalls, etc..

Amongst all other rooms the bedroom is a space where comfortlevels have to be kept maximum. But the word comfort is a relative term. The meaning of comfort is not just a sleep of8 hours. A good sleep inside a bedroom is a bare minimum expectation which can not be ignored.

But comfort varies from person to person. For someone itfeels good by just sitting in a rocking chair, sipping a cupof coffee and enjoying good view around the house or forsomeone it could be listening to good music or watching nightsky full of stars.

So when it comes to design any space many aspects come intoconsideration. Design is not just arrangement of furniture, choosing color schemes, deciding textures/finishes etc..Ithas to deal with "feeling good" about the space.

Of course all these factors when used in a unique way, canturn out to be a great design. The above mentioned "feel good" factor comes about by selecting a "theme" based design.
When we try to look towards the empty space through a theme, everything gets a definition and can be dealt uponeasily.

Let's see an example.

If I decide to decorate a bedroom which is empty, first Iwill have to decide on a particular style to execute. If it'smy own bedroom then I must know what kind of style best suitsmy personality. This choice of style will greatly influence, the kind of furniture, color scheme, finishes I use.

Here I can go for contemporary style/oriental style/countrystyle. All these have a unique set of parameters right fromthe layout of furniture to what diameter should I use for thecurtain rods.
A design deals with a big view starting from furniture layout and goes in-depth, deciding with each and every minute detailsof linen. All these affect the final expression, which isrequired for "feeling good". All these detailing will changethe moment to shift from your theme/style.

That's why by fragmenting the entire design process into themeoptions can make the process easier and gives a direction tostart the execution of any project.

If you are designing for someone else, it's a good idea tofirst know your client's likes and dislikes. I mean hispersonality, his hobbies, his job profile, etc... Rememberthat HE is going to use this room, it's his baby.

Of course once you start with a theme, it normally happensthat you will get more richer and creative ideas duringprimary sketching process.

I hope this article was helpful.

The importance of bedroom design in a home decoration project.

Dear friends,
A home is a place where we live, spend most of our lives, with family members and our loved ones. Everyone of usknows that a home is not just a structure of bricks and mortar.it's an experience.

A typical home consists of at least a living room, bedroom(s),kitchens, toilet blocks, dining room. This my vary dependingupon a home is an apartment or a unit in the neighborhood.

Amongst the above mentioned rooms, the bedroom is the most important space.
Why?
Because this is where we are most comfortable. This is wherewe express our deepest emotions to our loved ones. This iswhere we sleep and gain energy to work for tomorrow.

A bedroom design project includes a careful study of the surrounding of the entire home. When an architect plans a home, he takes into consideration many parameters forthe location of various spaces.
Lets take an example of the bedroom itself.

While deciding the location of the bedroom, an architectmight go through the following checklist.
* North direction

* Path of the sun.
* Surrounding landscapes.
* Presence of other natural elements such as lake, flowing river, seashore, etc.. which could be visible through bedroom window.
* Wind direction.
* Manmade other features, such as tall buildings, roads, etc..

These external factors directly affect the interior of a bedroom. This is true with any space and not only bedroom.

For example the amount of sunlight entering in a room willaffect the dimensions of the window openings, which will in turn affect the available space inside the room for furniture.

The overall atmospheric conditions outside, will affect the type of finishes and materials used for furnishings, linen, flooring, etc.. A bedroom on seashore will have a differentset of weather conditions to deal with than a room on a hill slope with heavy snowfall.

That's why the interior design of any living habitual spaceis an exact replica of what's happening outside. Everythingis so dynamic. A slight change in the outside world canaffect the appearance of the home altogether.
If you are trying to design your own space then this article might help to start thinking on the concept level.
With these words I end this article and hope it was useful.

How a Good Bedroom Design Can Boost Your Confidence.

Do you know that your bedroom is responsible for whoyou are right now.

Your own bedroom is the place which you see last when yougo to sleep and also is the first place you see when youwake in the morning.

These two are the times of the day when you are most receptive to receive any messages, good or bad.
Hey, what did I say? Good or Bad. Yes, it's true, anythingyou see, feel, touch, smell, listen to at this time of theday will contribute in making your "personality", no matterwhether it works for you or not.

That's why you can make use of this fundamental reality tounconsciously program yourself almost automatically, bytaking care of your bedroom. In short you can "design"your bedroom as a self help tool.

The term "design" in itself has a much wider scope. Designis not just color scheme, materials, lighting, furniture andits arrangement in the bedroom. It includes the personalityof the person who is going to use it.

While in a bedroom, a person is more relaxed, feels moresecured and is open minded to accept more positive messages. That's why it is necessary to understand thepersonality of a person before designing his/her bedroom.
His/her likes/dislikes, moods, what motivates him/her canaffect the entire bedroom design strategy. This design strategy includes the type of furniture to be used (iron, wood, canecontemporary), color schemes to be used (cool, warm, composite)types of flooring materials(tiles, carpets, wooden floors,PVC floors), the overall theme of the bedroom(oriental, contemporary)

That's why a good bedroom design is one which creates a feeling of security for it's owner. Use of natural elementssuch as plants/flowers can greatly add to the motivationalcapacity of a bedroom space. Since plants and flowers already have a beauty of their own, can greatly enhance theaura of the bedroom.

A bedroom which is nothing but a full mess, is harmful fordevelopment of a healthy mind. A room full of clutter andunnecessary garbage gives a negative message to yoursubconscious. As far as possible, office work, computersshould be avoided in a bedroom.

If there is a scarcity of space and such situation arisesall care must be taken to keep the work clean and healthy. This requires a little effort, but payoffs are huge if doneon a regular basis.

I hope this article was informative and positive.

The concept of positive and negative spaces in interior design.

When talking about positive and negative spaces it is importantto first understand the term "space" in itself. In interiordesign any volume which is being contained within masonrywalls and are habitable is normally termed as space.

The volume that gets enclosed in an architectural structure isjust a tiny fraction of the vast amount of "universal space".By universal space I mean the cosmos or the gigantic vastnessin which our planet and all other planets, starts etc.. survive.

The volume, which gets contained in a building, varies according tothe use of the building. A cinema theatre and a bedroom will surelyhave different purposes and hence volume. Volume gets defined bythree factors, length, breadth and height of the habitable room.

But irrespective of the volume both types of buildings mentioned above have "spaces" enclosed within. Lets consider the bedroomfor the sake of this article.

A typical bedroom will have certain architectural elements attached to it at the time of construction of the building andcertain "imposed" later for the sake of proper function. Alsoit is important to note that no one builds bedrooms in isolation.A bedroom is always a part of the entire home plan.

The architectural elements already present in a bedroom would beattached toilet and its entrance door, attached terrace or backyard entry, attached study room. All these spaces havework like supplementary role in a bedroom. Now the "imposed"elements are the furniture in the room, other accessories thatwill occupy the space in a bedroom.

A typical bedroom will have a double bed, wardrobe, dressing table, side tables, study table, book shelf etc.. All theseare necessary to use the room in a comfortable way. When thesefurniture are arranged in a room what remains is termed as the"circulation space". Now most people think that the volume ofthe furniture and the remaining empty space must have a balancebetween them. Because it is not the occupied volume, but theempty volume, that decides the comfort levels inside a room.

If you visit a store room on the basement of a house which isnormally used to dump useless things, you will notice that theempty space remained is very less and hence the comfort levelsthere, are poor. So in interior design the "empty space" isequally important. Now here comes the concept of positive andnegative spaces. Normally a negative space is considered aspace which can not be used for a specific human activity.

But this is not true. As said above the over all comfort levelsin a room is determined by both the occupied as well as non-occupiedspaces. So any smallest piece of floor area that is not being occupied is going to contribute to the comfort levels.

That's why the terminology of being positive and negative as far as usability is considered becomes a personal matter. Whatyou think as a useless and non functional space can become agood place for your kid and his friends when they play hide and seek. It's just the viewpoint to look at thing that matters.

Also a little creativity can alter a non-functional space intoa functional one. But remember what I said earlier, in interiordesign empty space matters. It is not just beautiful furniture, costly paints/wallpapers/paintings that are going to decorateyour rooms. Finally it boils down to only one thing, YOU and YOUR mental as well as physical health in that space.

I hope this article was helpful to everyone.
